Nearly 30 people stood atop a ventilation grate while watching an outdoor concert in Seongnam, South Korea this Friday. Due to the cumulation of their weight, the grate suddenly collapsed, sending the spectators down the shaft 20 meters (65 feet) to the parking lot below. 16 are reported dead, while another 11 were seriously injured, according to the Associated Press.
Roughly 700 people had gathered for the outdoor music festival just south of the nation’s capital. Most of the concertgoers were viewing a performance by 4Minute, a popular girls’ band native to South Korea. Of those dead, fire officials reported them to be commuters who stopped by to witness the show after leaving work. They said most of the dead are men in their 30s to 40s, along with five women in their 20s to 30s.
After the grate collapsed, dozens of people were reportedly gazing down the dark shaft where the people had once been standing. South Korean television stations state the ventilation grate was 10 to 12 feet wide and reached up to many attendants’ shoulders.
